ROAD MOVIE

The Road Movie - product of the counter-culture, of the ideology of protest - proposes the road as an experimentation, as a place of liberty and revolt which invites the search for other spaces, other experiences. The object of the search is uncertain and unknown.
A choreographic logbook divided into sequences.
ROAD MOVIE is structured in 7 stages, 7 meetings. A series of 7 shorts, independent and complementary. A plot based on travel and movement.
At each step : a meeting.
Each meeting constitutes a duet made up of jean-philippe derail / protagonist and his guest performer / fellow traveller. Each step defines its own rules, its place, its context, its form, its aesthetic and its rhythm. And while each one develops independently, they all put to work certain codes of the road movie genre. So combined, they form a global object, echoing each other through points of contact, constants and leitmotivs. From one sequence to the other, similar recurrences of travel images and passing landscapes : camera movements forward and laterally, on the road or in the sky. From one sequence to the other, the same narrative convention in which characters engage in a quest that transforms them, through an initiatory journey of stages/tests.
In his book Postcards from the Cinema, Serge Daney explains that the journey is related to the desire to see, the desire for revelation, experience and verification. Dismissing the story in favor of the instant, ROAD MOVIE reflects the trip that the performers undergo, their own transformation over the length of the proposal, their own moving from one state to another. The performance is recorded over time, in its entirety, before being cut, mixed in a "choreographic editing"* guided by the rhythm and composition of actions, the combinations of bodies in space.
From one stage to the other, the same atypical encounters of characters pushed to excess. By testing vice, hatred, abjection or madness, each meeting explores both the absurd and the endearing in our social constructions.

* "between dance and cinema, I choose both."
Cinema is a medium of motion reproduction. Like dance, it is movement. Hence the desire to bring the two together, by trying to create choreography with cinema's tools and to use the camera's frame and point of view choreographically.
ROAD MOVIE continues research into crossing artistic worlds through the creation of hybrid forms, developing a movement and mobility aesthetic.

Right now, I'm afraid. I'm afraid of walking away again. I'm afraid of what I might find. But I'm even more afraid of not facing this fear.
